Ubuntu 23.04 "Lunar Lobster" was released last April, and it is a short support version with a support period of nine months. The official support for this release has now officially ended.

Many people were discussing which kernel version Ubuntu 24.04 LTS would adopt, with most believing it would be between 6.6 and 6.7. However, Canonical engineer Andrea Righi has announced that Linux 6.8 will be adopted as the default kernel in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

According to Canonical's update plan, the next long-term support Ubuntu desktop/server release will also use Linux 6.8 as its default kernel, with a release date expected on April 25th.

Experimental versions of the new Ubuntu noble kernel (version 6.8-rc) can be obtained through ppa:canonical-kernel-team/unstable and will be updated weekly.

It is worth noting that Ubuntu 23.10 is also a short support version that will end its support at the end of this year (7月). On the other hand, the long-term support version Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which was released earlier this year (April), will receive five years of updates.
